Painted on a reflective surface mounted on polycarbonate panels, Fiction III is an embellishment of light and movement. Layers of paint dance in and out of view, both on top of the polycarbonate and below, inviting the gaze into a meditation on depth and space, alternating between the colorful flickers of paint on its surface, and on the contents of the structure beneath. Like an underpainting culled from the world around us, Sophie Kitching’s composition draw the viewer’s eye into a negotiation with environmental cues and abstracted sensation, presenting us with fragments of a half-remembered landscape, held in a vertical grid.
A keen observer of her environment, Sophie Kitching (b. 1990, Isle of Wight, UK) creates installations, paintings and sculptures that condense the affective experiences of a journey through nature and narrative. She has exhibited internationally in Paris at Palais de Tokyo, Maison de Chateaubriand and Villa Emerige; in New York at Pioneer Works and Park Hyatt New York, and in solo & group shows in Berlin, Brussels, Marseille, Arles, Frankfurt, London, Torre, Vilnius, Toronto. A graduate from the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, Paris (2014), Sophie Kitching was nominated for the emerging artist grant Bourse Révélations Emerige in 2016. In 2017, her monographic catalogue Nuits Américaines was published by Lienart, and she created sets for the Ballet Don Quichotte at Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse the same year. In 2018-2022, Sophie Kitching is awarded an artist studio at Painting Space 122 in the East Village, as part of their Project Space Studio Program.
