PROVENANCE: Courtesy of the Artist
This series began during Jones’s residency at Blue Mountain Center. A selection
of these works were presented in 2015 at a solo exhibition at ART 101 in
Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This very precise delicate work was preformed in a swirling instant by a species of sedge
grass named Carex Muskingumensis known by the common name Muskingum sedge. The
tips of the grass were misted with permanent ink. The work documents invisible gestures of
the grass in wind.
Kristin Jones maintains both studio and public practices, working collaboratively across disciplines to create site-specific, time-based projects that frame natural phenomena against the built environment. Her installations, works on and paper and time-lapse photography have been exhibited internationally. Signatures are recordings of the passage of time, captured on paper without the hand, rendering visible the unseen forces in the world around us. They may be seen as
“collaborations with the wind,” wherein the artist takes on the role of choreographer. Leaves, grasses, and branches misted with ink, animated by the air, become instruments to record gestures of wind, drawing invisible paths. The natural world resonates, marking the paper in instants, drawing precise moments.
Jones also has a deep commitment to public projects and has spent her career creating large-scale collaborative works for the public domain. She was a member of the ‘Dream Team’ for the master plan for Hudson River Park and has devoted more than 16 years to the founding of the Rome-based non-profit TEVERETERNO. By partnering with a treasury of artists, colleagues and the City of Rome to raise awareness of the Tiber River, Jones directed and facilitated programs for its protection and revitalization.
