Michelle Handelman

In collaboration with the Rauschenberg Residency, Handelman made a limited-edition series of prints from her project Hustlers & Empires (2018), originally commissioned by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The complete edition includes a series of 20 prints.

 

Michelle Handelman’s phantasmagoric video installations create complex spaces of ever-shifting queer identities. Coming up through the years of the AIDS crisis and Culture Wars of the 1990s, Handelman has built a body of work that confronts the things we collectively fear and deny: sexuality, death, chaos. She is a John Simon Guggenheim Fellow (2011), Creative Capital awardee (2019) and NYFA Fellow (2013). Her latest project Hustlers & Empires (2018) was commissioned by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and she has exhibited internationally including the Eli & Edythe Broad Art Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, MIT List Visual Arts Center, PARTICIPANT, INC, PERFORMA Biennial, The Henry Art Gallery, Guangzhou 53 Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art, Film Society of Lincoln Center, and Centre Georges Pompidou. Her single-channel films have screened at festivals throughout the world and her writing can be found in many journals and anthologies including QED: A Journal in LGBTQ Worldmaking; n.Paradoxa, International Feminist Art Journal, and Apocalypse Culture (Feral House Press, LA). She is an Associate Professor in the Film, Media and Performing Arts department at Fashion Institute of Technology. Her work has been written about in Artforum, Art in America, Bomb Magazine, Filmmaker Magazine, and The New York Times.
