I will present an installation about Henrietta Lacks, an African American woman who had cervical cancer. In 1951, a scientist at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, created the first immortal human cell line with a tissue sample taken without consent from her.

Since then, scientists have grown 20 tons of her cloned cells named HeLa cells, about 11,000 patents were created using HeLa cells, they were used for research into cancer, AIDS, gene mapping, the effects of radiation and toxic substances, and a myriad of other crucial scientific pursuits.

Henrietta’s family later clamored for, but never received, any compensation for the hospital’s unauthorized extraction of Henrietta’s cells.
